Bin collection crew

Give it up for a Hi-Viz Hero! Celebrating Surrey’s bin crews

Despite their hi-viz jackets, the hard work of local council bin collection crews in Surrey can go unnoticed and sometimes they are even verbally abused or put in danger by members of the public.

Fortunately, there are many ways you can help your collection crew. Here’s how:

  • Check which items go in which bins where you live using the Surrey Recycles search tool, which can also be downloaded as an app for easy use when you’re binning something.
  • Use our website to find out the correct way to leave out your waste and recycling so that your bin crew where you live can collect it safely.
  • Check below to find out how to leave recycling out that doesn’t fit into your bin where you live.
  • Park considerately so that collection vehicles can access your street, make sure bin lids are closed when put out and wash your hands before and after handling your bins.
  • Try and reduce your waste as much as possible. There are lots of tips in the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle section of our website. If you have a garden, we also provide discounted compost bins so you can compost your garden waste, some food waste and cardboard at home rather than putting it in the bin.
  • You can also thank your crew by giving them a wave in the morning, putting a note in your window or sticking a message to your bin.
