Recycle electricals from home
WARNING – electrical items and items with batteries in, i.e., vapes, electric toothbrushes and mobile phones, should never go in a bin as they are a fire risk. Visit our webpage for information on how to recycle batteries from home and read on to find out how to recycle electricals.
Your district or borough council is responsible for collecting your waste. All local councils except Epsom and Ewell and Reigate and Banstead provide an electricals collection service for residents. To find out more about collections or to report issues with collections, visit our webpage on kerbside waste collections.
If you live in Elmbridge, Guildford, Mole Valley, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, Tandridge, Waverley or Woking, you can put electricals out for recycling.
If you live in Epsom and Ewell or Reigate and Banstead as well as all other areas of Surrey, Anglo Doorstep Collections provides free collections of electricals, among many other types of waste.
Electrical items are anything that has a plug, has an internal battery, i.e., a USB-chargeable handheld fan, or has a removable battery, i.e., an electric toothbrush.
To find out what to do with different types of electrical items, visit our webpage on can you recycle electricals?
If you live in Elmbridge, Guildford, Mole Valley, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, Tandridge or Woking, leave your electricals in a small, tied plastic bag next to your bins on collection day.
Items must be contained within bags, which must be no larger than a standard sized supermarket carrier bag. Items in larger bags, such as bin bags, will not be collected.
If you live in Waverley, you will need to book a free collection from your home. To find out more information, visit Waverley Borough Council’s webpage on small electricals and textiles collection.
Batteries should be recycled separately. For more information, visit our webpage on recycling batteries from home.
If you live in Elmbridge, Mole Valley, Surrey Heath and Woking, vapes can be collected with your other small electricals.
If you live in Tandridge, they can be recycled if you put them in a separate bag and put them next to your bins for collection.
In all other areas of Surrey, vapes cannot be collected for recycling. All shops that sell vapes must take back vapes for recycling. Vapes can also be taken to all community recycling centres to be recycled.
Once collected, electricals are turned into small pieces of metal and plastic, which are used to make many new products including ships, railings, lampposts, jewellery and musical instruments. Find out more by visiting our webpage on what happens to your waste.
Recycling electricals is good for the environment. When you recycle electricals, it is good for the environment because it means that it saves on using up new resources to create products. It also saves councils money when you recycle electricals as it costs more to process rubbish than it does to recycle them.
There are other ways to recycle electrical waste, such as using community recycling centres and taking them to shops with takeback schemes. For more information, visit our webpage on waste locations around the county.
