Shake up your shopping habits this Second Hand September

Second Hand September has arrived and we’re encouraging all residents to think twice before buying new this autumn.

Shopping second hand helps you save money, reduce waste by keeping items in circulation for longer and can help your local community thrive.

Whether you’re a university student looking for crockery on a budget, a parent searching for seasonal clothing before school starts or a bookworm looking for your next read, your local second hand shop might just have the perfect item for you.

Before you buy

Shopping second hand is a great way to make sustainable choices, but the very best way to reduce waste is to prevent it in the first place. So, before you buy, consider:

  • Could it be repaired? If you’re looking to replace a broken item, check whether it can be repaired first. Fortunately, Surrey is home to several repair cafes, where volunteers can help repair anything from clothing and textiles to toys and household appliances.
  • Could you borrow it instead? If you only need an item once or at most, very occasionally, consider borrowing it from a friend, neighbour or your local library of things. It could save you money, space and help prevent an item going to waste.
  • Can it be donated or sold on? If you’re replacing an item or having a clear-out, donate or sell items you no longer need so others can enjoy them for years to come.

This September, shake up your shopping habits and give second hand a go. We promise you won’t regret it! Find local second hand shops, repair cafés and library of things near you by browsing Surrey’s zero waste map.
