Every year, 4.4 million tonnes of edible food is thrown away from UK homes, costing residents a staggering £17 billion per year, which is £1,000 a year for a family of four.
Food Waste Action Week is a national campaign created with the aim to halve food waste by 2030. By preventing food waste and recycling anything that can’t be eaten, we can unlock more value from the food we already have by helping it stretch further.
Through these simple changes, you can give back to your pocket and our planet:
- transform yesterday’s dinner into today’s lunch
- plan your meals ahead and buy only what you need
- store food properly to make it last longer
- use your food caddy for bones, peelings, cores and scraps that can’t be eaten
Small changes make a huge impact. By reducing food waste you can save time and money, as well as help cut the 16 million tonnes of greenhouse gases created by wasted food each year.
