Let’s keep Surrey a low-waste county

We recently published the Surrey Waste Tracker, which shows that, on average, Surrey households produce 444.8kg of rubbish per year. That’s the weight of three panda bears! But we’re doing OK compared to the average in England, which is 511kg or, as we prefer to measure it, six kangaroos. It means that we’re in 8th place in the league table out of 29 similar local authorities. Not bad!

But! It could be better. We could waste less and we could climb the table. But we need your help – here’s how you can…

From one bin to another
The best way to reduce your rubbish is to recycle as much as you can. The Surrey Waste Tracker also shows that Surrey is the joint 2nd best recycler in England and we recently published an article on how you can keep Surrey at the top of the recycling league table. Read it and reduce!

Be frugal with your food
The average family of four could save around £1,000 a year by reducing food waste. It’s not easy but with a bit of planning and prep, you can do it. Plan your shops and your meals in advance, store food correctly and know your portion sizes. Check out our page on food waste reduction for more tips.

Reuse, reuse, reuse
Every time you use an item for one use only, think…is there a reusable version of this? Plastic water bottles? No thank you – use a refillable one instead. Cling film or foil for sandwiches? Nope – use a reusable wrap or plastic container. Plastic shopping bag? No way – take a cloth one to the shops. Some of these changes are small, all of them are easy and when we all do them, they make a big difference.

Surrey, we’re already doing well, but we want to be the best!
