Easter celebrations can generate significant amounts of waste, this quick and simple guide outlines how to manage your waste responsibly over the Easter period.
Be egg-stra mindful with your food waste
Tonnes of food goes to waste every Easter, including an estimated 3,000 tonnes of chocolate! Plan ahead to avoid overbuying, get creative with leftovers using our delicious recipes, and consider donating any unopened items to a local community fridge or food bank.
Any scraps that cannot be eaten, such as meat bones or vegetable peelings, can be recycled in your food waste caddy.
Crack down on recycling
Over 8,000 tonnes of packaging is generated from Easter egg products in the UK every year. If put in the wrong bin, that’s a huge amount of material which could have been recycled and reused again and again!
Here’s the key things to know:
- foil from chocolate eggs can now be recycled! Collect and scrunch all your foil into a ball (the size of a tennis ball) and pop it into your mixed recycling bin.
- your cards, envelopes, cardboard boxes and plastic trays can all go in your mixed recycling bin. If any of these items contain glitter or foil, they should go in your rubbish bin.
- plastic wrap from bunches of flowers, gift hampers and food products, can all be saved and taken to a local supermarket recycling point.
- shredded paper, often used in egg baskets, can be recycled in Surrey. Simply visit our online search tool to learn how to dispose of it correctly where you live.
Recycle your spring blooms
Once your flowers and other floral displays have passed their best, pop them in your garden waste bin. Remember to remove any decorations first!
Composting is another simple and great way to recycle your garden waste. Surrey residents are eligible for discounted composting products, helping turn your garden and food waste into nutrient-rich compost at home.
