Food waste digesters
Some food waste such as meat, fish, dairy, bones and cooked food waste can’t be added to a normal composter. However, a range of food digesters are available for your garden and kitchen which can take all food.
Green Cones and Green Johannas
Green Cones reduce food waste to its natural components of water, carbon dioxide and a small residue. It takes all cooked and uncooked food waste including meat, fish, bones, dairy products, vegetables and fruit.
The Green Johanna, looks like a plastic compost bin but will compost two parts cooked and uncooked food waste to one part garden waste and produces a rich compost all year round.
Surrey County Council offers Surrey residents Green Cones and Green Johannas at reduced prices. Visit Great Green Systems for more information.
Kitchen composters and wormeries
Kitchen composters (also known as bokasi, which is Japanese for ‘fermentation’) are airtight containers that you keep indoors. You can add all your kitchen waste including meat, fish, dairy, vegetable peelings, bread, cooked and uncooked food. Every time you add food waste add a handful of bokashi bran. This contains micro-organisms and molasses which ferment the waste turning it into a nutrient rich compost and a liquid plant food.
Wormeries come in a range of shapes and sizes, and contain special worms which eat your food waste. Wormeries produce a limited quantity of compost and a liquid, which forms a concentrated plant food.
Wormeries and kitchen composters are available from Get Composting and Great Green Systems.
