What to compost

Order a free compost bin for schools

Schools can order up to two 330-litre, black compost bins that can be used to create compost in their school for free through the Surrey Environment Partnership.

To order, just email your name, delivery details and a phone number to info@getcomposting.com.

Schools should only compost fruit and vegetables in a standard compost bin, and should use a more specialised hot composter to more successfully compost cooked food, meat and dairy.

Before getting started, schools are advised to read the Environment Agency’s guidance on T23 waste exemption: aerobic composting and associated prior treatment. This gives guidance on what you can and can’t do when treating waste on school premises. Schools should complete a form to register a free exemption that allows them to handle food waste for the purposes of composting.
